Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is a whirlwind of mayhem wrapped in a rich legacy of a treasured anime and it never stops for breath. You get to fight in glorious detail with an incredible sense of freedom and flow, and from the very first battle you have; you’ll be harnessing Chakra and walloping your opponents with Ninjitsu like nobody’s business.
The game takes place at the end of the Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, in a wastleland of sorts and is told in a linear manner. Each chapter in the game has a long, and I mean LONG opening and closing cut-scene. So you’ll need to exercise some patience as you sit back and watch, and watch. Although fascinating, the story can be difficult to follow at times, especially considering it’s an entirely new experience for me. Going in I recognized that, so it’s hard for me to punish a game in a series where I know little about the story arc. That said, I can appreciate the labour of love that went into each of those cut scenes. The detail is stunning and almost every aspect of the game is presented beautifully.
Being one of the best selling mangas of all time it’s safe to say the story of Naruto won over many hearts in its fifteen-year run.
The heartfelt series follows young Naruto’s endeavours to become the Hokage of his village, while controlling a powerful demon fox sealed within him.
The game fuses its anime and manga cinematics with some of the best fighting mechanics I’ve ever seen, and if you’re not perturbed by overly long cut scenes or a story buried deep in its own mythology, be brave and dive right in. The flow of battle is second to none and the variety of moves and combos at your disposal makes for some special set pieces. At time it feels like glorified button-bashing, but there is definitely a skill involved in putting together the perfect sequence of moves, blocks and combos. Once more, there is so much to take in when it comes to utilizing every aspect of your arsenal, so heading to the practice arena is a good a place as any to start.
After you feel like you have done everything you could with the story mode, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 does offer an adventure mode. To me this mode seemed tact-on, almost an afterthought. The mode does a nice job at giving you some background to the series yet at the end of the day I never felt like this mode had all that much to offer.
The decent size story mode and replay value from the online and adventure modes makes this a grand fighter for the Nintendo Switch.
