How have cryptocurrencies attempted to solve the scalability problem?

<!-- SC_OFF --><div class="md"><p>I understand many like the idea of the 'lightning network' which takes funds off the chain, essentially marking them out and preparing them for their intended use in advance. I also saw that other currencies have either decreased the block time, increased the block size or both (but this seems for of a temporary problem.)</p> <p>I'm doing some research for an essay and am wondering what potential methods there are but also what vulnerabilities they could open up / flaws they might have.</p> <p>Thank you very much for any help and explanations.</p> </div><!-- SC_ON --> Kind Regards R
