Opened a new HSA but no HDHP

EDIT : Seems to be unanimous , I will be canceling tomorrow with fidelity and reversing my initiated bank transfer.

I opened a HSA with fidelity , and looked up some stuff after and realized I need a health care plan … which I don’t currently have and don’t plan on it. Why did they let me open one? Am I missing something or can you not open one unless you have a HDHP? I was under the impression you can use this account as a tax free way of paying medical expenses , but didn’t know it was to be in conjunction with a plan. It didn’t have me setup pre tax transfers , but it allowed me to initiate a external transfer from my bank. I guess I should’ve looked this up first. Can anyone shed some light here ?

submitted by /u/we_are_all_dead_
[link] [comments]
