A Few Basic Questions

I’m pretty new to cryptocurrency. I’ve done a lot of research the last few days to understand how and why they work, but I do have some questions I couldn’t seemingly find the answer to:

Where’s the money? From my few days in crypto it’s VERY volatile, which is fine I’m only putting in some occasional cash here and there mostly for fun but I have no idea how I should plan to walk away with cash. So I just watch and when it’s super up sell it off, then wait for it to crash again and buy some more?

If I’m tracking cryptocurrency via a stocks app, like Apple Stocks, it uses % up or down, but what’s it basing it off of? Given crypto trades 24/7 and never resets marker price is it just the beginning price of the crypto?

Thanks for the help. I was just feeling interested and had some spare cash, so bought a few bucks worth of XLM and XRP just to see what happens.

Kind Regards R
