Why do stocks have any value?

<!-- SC_OFF --><div class="md"><p>I don't understand why individual shares in a company have any monetary value. I get that you own a tiny piece of the company and that it's based on the value of the company as a whole but why is each share worth anything? Besides maybe a dividend you will never get anything in return for owning a piece of a business unless you find someone else who wants to buy it from you. </p> <p>Even if the business is sold to another company the shares you own don't change, the company they belong to does.
