Can someone explain where the money of moons comes from?

Everybody's circlejerking about how <em>every single upvote</em> gives you 0.4 moons = 2 cents, but nobody's ever discussing where the money comes from. There are probably hundreds of upvotes every second in this sub, and this crypto money is just appearing out of thin air?
