Why is buying stocks or ETF‘s so intransparent in the way it gets processed (vs. c

English is not my native language so excuse any errors.

I started investing a while ago, first through an expensive broker where I live and then switched to Interactive Brokers.

Before starting my journey with stocks and ETF‘s I had bought som Ethereum coins a while back and was always impressed how easy it was. I could watch the order book update in real time, see what orders got executed and it just made sense.

With IBKR I get shown some outdated prices, the order book sometimes just looks very strange and I think there is no way to see what orders got executed for which prices in the last hour or so.

And I am wondering: why is that?

Why is it so damn difficult to see what you‘re doing when placing an order?

Example: it often happens that my ETF of choice trades at, say, $140.40 (last price), the book shows 140.55 as the lowest ask, I place my order at 140.55 but it won‘t get executed right away. Why does it not?? Maybe there is something about the order flow I don‘t get.

Anyone else wondered the same thing and got an answer?

submitted by /u/RednBlackEagle
[link] [comments]
