Will Bitcoin Network Ever be Energy Efficient?

Is there a second layer solution to deal with the mass amounts of electricity used to secure the network. I am a BTC holder and maximalist but I am starting to get concerned the energy usage will be the downfall and the reason why another Cryptocurrency eventually becomes the standard bearer.

I would assume there are smart people working on the issue but I haven't heard much. Also, yes, I know most miners use renewable energy, but that isn't a good long term solution. As the network grows and price goes up, it is still going to be a massive energy suck which is not sustainable.

Would love to hear someone knowledgable on the subject thoughts.

Kind Regards R
