Thought I was selling my Facebook shares at a loss?

I've been investing in FB since 2014 and as of last fall had accumulated 200 shares. Unfortunately, many of these shares were purchased near FB's all time high. With the huge hit FB had taken over the last few years my once profitable position had fallen down to about even and in October I sold 100 shares to halve my investment and free up some cash. Now, I thought this was going to be a wash sale, but my tax docs are showing that isn't the case. Merrill Edge went back and liquidated my earliest 100 shares, which ended up being a profitable sale. Is this always how it works? When you say to sell X number of shares do brokerages always do so in the order they were purchased?

submitted by /u/raybanshee
[link] [comments]
